A Purple Tree, Firetrucks, and the Moon…

Monday, March 9th, 2009

It’s been a while since I shared some photos and I finally have some pictures of other things besides our cats.

I have no idea what type of tree this is but it’s flowers are absolutely beautiful. It was really windy the day I took these photos I was actually surprised to find any of the images usable.

I’m not sure why the Fire Department was in our parking lot, but I figured the emergency lights would make for some interesting shots. I wasn’t disappointed.

I went out on our balcony around 1:30 am to check on our plants. The moon was gorgeous and hanging low just above the apartment roofs. I set up the tripod and took some shots with 1 to 1.5 seconds of shutter speed. The resulting images are a bit surreal.

Green Smoothie…

Monday, March 9th, 2009

You can’t read about Raw Foodism with out stumbling on the Green Smoothie. I tends to be the staple of many a Raw Foodists diet. The general formula for a Green Smoothie is 60% fruit/ 40% green leafy vegetables. You put them all on the blender (or a Vita-Mix) and blend till smooth or close to smooth.

The Green Smoothie pictured above is:

2 Bananas ( 230 grams )

Frozen Mango ( 115 grams )

Baby Spinach ( 100 grams )

1.5 cups of water

I know the proportions are slightly off, but that’s the beauty of the Green Smoothie it can be adjusted to fit you pallet or dietary needs. This recipe made 2 pint glasses of smoothie which is about 288 calories.

Scenes from a Parking Garage…

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Today I got the new lens I ordered. It’s a Canon 50mm 1.8/f aka the “Thrifty Fifty” or the “Fantastic Plastic”. It’s a great cheap lens, but it feels cheap and I have heard it’s not very durable. However since it is cheap and takes great pictures it has become a must have lens for Canon owners.

Here are some photos from the top floor of a parking garage:

Lunch at the Triangle…

Monday, February 16th, 2009

On Valentines Day Nicole and I met up with Kearney and Kevin at Austin Books. Then we headed over to the Triangle for lunch at Mandola’s Italian Market for lunch.

Kevin sketching while we wait for our food. You can see the finished drawing on his blog.

Kearney.

Excellent Pizza.

(sorry the pictures aren’t that great. they were taken with my digital point and shoot which takes mediocre images indoors.)

Beer and BBQ…

Monday, February 16th, 2009

A few weekends back Nicole and I ventured out of Austin for a day trip.

First stop was Shiner, TX home of the Spoetzl Brewery where they make Shiner beer. We got a quick tour of the facility which was unfortunately not in operation because it was Saturday. After the tour went to the gift shop/tasting room and tasted a few of their other beers.

Next stop was Blacks Barbecue in Lockhart, TX.  I really enjoyed their brisket and sauce. Nicole didn’t care for it.

Finally on our way out of Lockhart we stopped at Kreuz Market for more Barbecue. Nicole really enjoyed their brisket and I didn’t. They didn’t appear to have sauce which is one of my favorite things.

On the verge of slipping in to meat induced coma’s we headed back to Austin. It was a very fun day.

Food in the Raw

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Thursday night Nicole and I took a class, “Easy Raw Food” at the Whole Foods Culinary Center. The class was taught by Erika Martin who is a Certified Living & Live Raw Food Instructor. If you’re not familiar with the ideology of Raw Foodism the basic concept is you eat food that hasn’t been heated above 115 F. Most Raw Foodists are vegans and they eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and nuts.

The menu for the class was:

  • Green Smoothies
  • Homestyle Minestrone Soup
  • Spicy Fajitas with Guacamole
  • Super Easy Chocolate Pie with Cashew Cream and Chocolate Sauce

I pretty much liked everything. Nicole on the other hand only liked the Chocolate Pie. The “Green Smoothie” consisted of Parsley, Mango and Banana all blended together and although it was green it basically tasted like Banana. The Minestrone Soup was my least favorite it was like eating cold chunky pasta sauce (which is basically what it was). Of course I am not a huge fan of tomatoes anyway. The Fajitas besides being cold/room temp. could almost pass for normal Fajitas and were my favorite dish of the night. The Chocolate pie was also very good and could easily be passed off as a regular old dessert. Get this the filling is made from Raw Cocoa powder and Avocados. Yes I said Avocados, but you’d never know it.

We had a great time. While I doubt we’d ever go 100% Raw I think the real goal is mainly to introduce more healthy foods in to our diet.

Juan in a Million…

Friday, January 30th, 2009

I am not sure how we got on the subject, but this past week Daniel, a member of my development team,  suggested we got to this restraunt he saw on the TV show “Man vs. Food”. The restraunt is called Juan in a Million and boasts a 3/4 pound breakfast taco stuffed with Egg, Cheese, Potato and Bacon called the “Don Juan”. So today we (Nicole and I) met up with Daniel, his wife Suzie, his friend Neil (?), Ben and  Gina for lunch.

I had the “Don Juan” it was very tasty, but it’s basically the filling for 3 breakfast tacos in a single tortilla. So you either need to ask for extra tortillas or a bunch of the filling with a fork. Nicole didn’t care for it. I believe her exact comment was that “it needed more bacon”. I am not sure the “Don Juan” was good enough to make me a regular, but I do plan on going back for seconds in the near future.
