iPhone Developer….

Monday, June 16th, 2008

I am thinking of taking a swing at developing for the iPhone. I need to upgrade to my laptops OS to Leopard and there will be a steep learning  curve since I have never done any compiled language programming.

On the other hand I don’t think mobile computing is going away anytime soon and the iPhone is the 600 lb gorilla in the room.  I also think there will be a continuing merge of web services and mobile based applications.

The real question is: Am I truly up to the challenge?

The Tamale Incident…

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Well I made Tamales today. I was hoping to be able to report how great they turned out and share my recipe. Unfortunately they turned out so-so . However I can say I learned a bit about tamale making and I vow to try again in the future.

The main thing I learned is that you cannot over estimate how bland masa and corn meal are. So your filling needs to be well seasoned to counter act that blandness. Oh well… it’s not like they were inedible just very, very, very bland.

Hey Pelosi, wake up!

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

I rarely talk about politics on this blog because it’s messy business. Along the lines of discussing religion, but this whole “impeachment is off the table” deal House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has going really chaps my ass. All the polls I have seen show that the majority of Americans are in favor of impeachment of both President Bush and Vice-President Dick Cheney (especially Cheney). Two years ago Democrats went out and voted in force to make sure the majority was secured, but what has it gotten us?

The majority of Americans want to see this administration held accountable for its actions and the Dems on the hill had better remember that they can be replaced. I really don’t understand why impeachment is “off the table” unless the Dems are worried about a backlash if/when they get a candidate in office. I just don’t get it.

Anyway my excitement over Obama for President is tempered by my contempt for the Democratic Party over the impeachment non-issue.

Update: Here is a good article on the subject from Mary Lyon at The Huffington Post

Holy Helvetica…

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Tonight I watched the documentary Helvetica. Yes there is a feature length documentary on the Helvetica type face. The documentary centers around Helvetica, but is also a glimpse in to the world of typography.

The use of Helvetica, apparently,  popular with the rise of Modernism in the 50’s and 60’s. Apparently there was a revolt, of typographical sorts, during the 90’s in the form of Grunge. I am not sure, but I am guessing this coincided with the rise of Grunge culture in general. Lately however there has been a shift back to the clean lines of Helvetica.

The last 15-20 mins left me with the feeling the design/typography world is now a bit polarized on Helvetica. Some love it, some hate it. Now that I am more informed on the subject I think I can safely say that Helvetica is my new favorite font. Did I have a favorite font before tonight? Ha! I am not telling!

In closing I would just like to say that I reserve the right to have completely misinterpreted the entire documentary, which why if the subject remotely interests I suggest you rent it for yourself.

What are you dreams?

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

If someone told you tomorrow you can do whatever you want forever no worries or limitations what would you do? Is your answer what you are currently doing? If not are you working towards those dreams? If not why?

Just wondering….

A good day…

Monday, June 9th, 2008

Normally Mondays aren’t the highlight of my week, but today was a good day. Of course maybe it’s because Friday was such a not good day…

I am not sure if I was on the verge of being sick or what, but I was just off my game. I confused the times of my dentist appointment, which meant I missed my appointment for my teeth cleaning and had to reschedule. I also messed up, in my head, the time of a call I had. Luckily my Blackberry reminded me and I didn’t miss the call. I just felt off all day and it was Friday so I had all weekend to think about how I messed up.

In retrospect no real harm was done, but it really bothered me. I am definately my harshest critic.

Anyway it was nice to leave work today feeling like I had a handle on things again.

100,000 miles!!!!

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

On the way to work this morning my Hyundai Elantra reached a milestone in it’s life:

100,000 miles… It took a little over 7 years… and about 4,000 gallons of gasoline.
