Kayaking on Lake Travis…

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Sunday morning Nicole and I headed out to Lake Travis to do some paddling. We met up with Roland, Kearney and his girlfriend Robin. We launched from Cyperess Creek County Park. We paddled approximately 2.5 to 3 miles stopping along the way to take a quick dip.

When we got home Nicole and I took a well deserved nap.

Vacation…

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I am officially on vacation for the next nine days!! Of course I am a bit of a workaholic so I am sure I will feel weird not going to work on Monday morning. I know how ever I need the down time to recharge a bit.

Sick Car Update Update…

Tuesday, June 24th, 2008

So the word from the transmission shop the issue is the “Speed Sensor” needs to be replaced and the transmission fluid needs changing all to the tune of $314. Needless to say I am relieved. When it comes to transmissions the cost of repair can escalate quickly.

I will hopefully be picking the car up Thursday morning.

As for now I am off to Dallas with Ben for a meeting at our Dallas office tomorrow.

Erase and install…

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

The first step I needed to take in developing for the iPhone was upgrading the OS on my Macbook to Leopard. I made the decision I was going to do a clean install and what that means is my hard drive will be erased then the new OS will be installed. While I was pretty sure I backed up all my files important files I was still pretty nervous when I clicked the button to start the install.

I am happy to report that everything went very smooth and things are now 80% to being back to normal. I still need to get a few more programs installed and transfer some more files from the external drive.

Sick Car Update…

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Well $330 later the car had it’s oil changed, 2 new belts, and a new battery. I was hopeful that the problem might have stemmed from low voltage due to a corroded battery terminal, but on my home from the shop after picking up the car the check engine light came on again. Needless to say I am not happy, but there is nothing I can do till Monday.

The general concensus is it’s the transmission or the sensors in the transmission. Which is pretty much what I read on the internet. Now I just need to find out how much it’s going to cost to get it fixed and set a line in the sand as to what price the repairs become unreasonable. I mean the car is paid for, but if it needs a new transmission is it worth dumping the money in to this car? I dunno… going to have sleep on that.

Sick Car…

Saturday, June 21st, 2008

For the past month or 2 periodically the check engine light would come on in my car and it would feel like the car was stuck in first or second gear. At first it would happen maybe two times a month, but this past week it did it maybe 4-8 times. Last night I was googling the symptoms and I learned that the behavior is called “Limp Mode”. Basically when the cars computer has an error it goes in to this mode to allow you to continue to drive, but limit the damage you can do.

So this morning I got up and dropped the car off at the mechanic and now I am just waiting for the diagnosis.

Goodbye Netflix…

Friday, June 20th, 2008

Netflix has announced that they will be eliminating their “Profiles” feature. “Profiles” basically allows Nicole and I to have 2 separate lists, or queues,  of movies. When Nicole returns one of her movies she gets the next movie in her list and when I return one of my movies I get the next in my list. The alternative is to manually shuffle a single queue so that each person gets the movie they want next. It’s a pain. Nicole and I did it for a while before they launched “Profiles”.

We’ve been customers of Netflix for 5 years. With this announcement we will be voting with our pocketbooks and either be canceling our or scaling down our account. Their are a lot of differnet options that I will be investigating from Blockbuster to Digital Downloads. We already use RedBox and love it.

It looks like a lot of people are mad about the elimination of “Profiles” and I am interested in what response, if any, Netflix will have.

Weekend Movie Re-cap…

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

I escaped the heat this weekend by staying indoors as much as humanly possible. I ended up watching a bunch of movies this weekend.

Jumper: Not nearly as bad as I thought it would be. It’s worth checking out.

The Other Boleyn Girl: I nominate this movie for a special effects award. They managed to make the the normally voluminous Scarlett Johansson look modest in the age of the corset and in the same movie gave Natalie Portman a bit of cleavage. They’re Wizards… I am telling you.

Incident at Oglala: Call me subversive, but I think every American should see this movie.

Gorillaz: Live in Manchester: I realized about half way through this I am really not a fan of Gorillaz music. They have a couple of songs I really like, but the rest of it isn’t for me.

Biting the bullet…

Monday, June 16th, 2008

So I went ahead and ordered what I need to get started in iPhone development. If nothing else I will get some exposure to development outside of web scripting. Wish me luck!!!

Anyone got any good ideas for iPhone Applications?
