Les Paul – Chasing Sound…

Tuesday, August 28th, 2007

Tonight I was trying to watch a documentary from Netflix, but for some reason it wouldn’t download. So I saw this other documentary called Les Paul – Chasing Sound so I clicked on it to see if it would download. Low and behold it worked. I figured it would be a documentary about the creation of the Gibson Les Paul guitar which in a sense it was, but mostly it was about Les Paul the man and his contributions to music.

Les Paul was a popular musician in the 40’s-50’s, he invented the solid body electric guitar, multi-track recording, overdubbing, and reverb among other things. Music as we know it today would be radically different with out Les Paul. It was kind of cool to see people that I think of as great musicians speaking of Les Paul like someone of my generation might speak of them.

If you are into music or music history I suggest you check out this documentary. If you are a Netflix subscriber you can watch it online with the “Watch Instantly” feature.

T.V. shows from iTunes…

Monday, August 27th, 2007

There have been times where I have wondered if I couldn’t just do away with cable and just purchase my favorite TV shows from iTunes.. well the ones you can’t just watch for free online like on ABC.com. I however have to admit that I have never downloaded any video from iTunes. Actually I take that back… I downloaded an episode of some show to test my father in laws video iPod, but I didn’t even really watch it.

I was poking around on iTunes tonight and I see they have the original “V: The mini-series”. If you are too young to remember “V” than I am not sure that you’ll truly be able to appreciate  watching it because it will probably just look like a bad bit of 1980’s Sci-fi. I remember being riveted to my seat while watching it as a kid. It’s basically about aliens that come to earth in search of resources…. with a slight twist. Anyway it’s $10 for the Mini-Series… they also have all the episodes of the TV show for $30.

I  think I will try downloading the Mini-series over the holiday weekend. It would be cool to find a cable to let me watch it on my actual TV. I will have to investigate a solution for that. If all else fails I can watch it on the 22 inch LCD. Turn off the lights and make popcorn like we used to do.

Do you remember those air poppers? They had a tray to melt butter on the top. Wow they still make them! I might have to invest in one of those.

Superbad is super good…

Friday, August 24th, 2007

Superbad Poster Ben, Gina, and I went to see Superbad at the Alamo Drafthouse tonight. They hadn’t seen it, but Nicole and I went to see it the Friday before I left. It was still very funny the second time around. If you’ve ever wanted to peer in to the mind of a sex crazed high school boys mind this is the movie for you.

I laughed my ass off through the entire thing on the first viewing. Although I think Knocked Up might of been funnier. I know that both movies, when they come out on DVD, will be added to my video collection.

Oh yeah sorry about the title of this post I know it’s a bad play on words, but I couldn’t help myself…. honest.

Playing Halo…

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

Halo 3 Logo….Halo 2 that is. I didn’t have an Xbox so when I bought my Xbox 360 I didn’t even think to pick up Halo 2 which was an Xbox game, but now that we are on the eve of the Halo 3 launch I decided I better get in gear and knock the rust off my FPS skillz. So when I got to Austin I picked up a copy of Halo 2. Ben and I have been playing. Ben has been kicking my ass, but I am slowly improving. I have real issues with playing split screen and I have never been that good at playing games with a controller.

Halo 3 will be launching on Sept. 25th, the day before my birthday, which gives me two great reasons to take the day off and frag.

Once you’ve gone Mac, you always go back…

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

B&W Apple LogoI used to be a Mac guy, but there was a point in college when I needed a new cheap computer. I had to make the switch to Windows. I hated Windows 98, but XP hasn’t been too bad. However I have been threating to leave Windows behind for a long time, but Linux, while cool, is too much work for my liking and Apple computers were still out of my budget.

Lately the urge to switch back has started to become too much to resist. Last Saturday Nicole and I went to the Apple store. I love that place. I guess I am a sucker for Apples flare for design and styling. I know I am not alone in this. Apple has pretty much based it’s business on making slick looking devices.

When I bought my first laptop 8 months ago I went cheap because I wasn’t sure how I was going to feel about laptops. Now that I know I love them I am more willing to drop some bucks on something as pricey as a MacBook. I realize now I want something with a much larger hard drive, more RAM, and doesn’t run Windows. I think a Macbook is a laptop that will fit the bill and serve me well for several years.

Well I made it safely to Austin one more time. I am looking forward to being in the office for the next few weeks and getting a lot done. I am excited and raring to go, but first I need to get a good nights rest.

Confessions of a Slacker Blogger…

Friday, August 17th, 2007

Ok so I haven’t been posting much lately and a lot of what I have been posting has had much to do with moving or Texas. I am getting ready to fly back to Austin on Sunday. I will be coming back for Labor Day. I plan to do something to get out and celebrate the holiday weekend. Then a few weeks later Ben flies up for a meeting in NYC. Later that week Ben and I will be driving my car down to Austin. I will be attending a conference in Dallas then flying home.  A few weeks after that we will be moving  permanently.

Ugh I am exhausted just thinking about it. I will be happy when we are settled and I can just relax a bit. Even after we move it will take a few months to fall into a routine and get used to calling the new apartment home.

Nicole and I are going to see SuperBad after work and then I am hoping to make it over to Mr. Beery’s to see Small Arms Dealer play. Tomorrow we are going to get up, take the ferry to Fire Island and hang out on the beach. Then when we get home I have to do laundry and pack up. Since I leave at 6 am on Sunday morning.

Caffeine withdrawl (part 3)…

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

I am feeling better today. I have been getting a lot more sleep… at least 8 hours a night which is great. I am still drinking one 20 oz soda a day. Next week I am planning on dropping that soda all together. I can see light at the end of the tunnel.

Audible.com…

Monday, August 13th, 2007

I have been listening to a lot of podcasts lately. Several of them are sponsored by and recommend Audible.com. It’s basically books on tape meets iTunes. It’s basically part subscription service part ala cart. I signed up since the first 3 months were half price. Every month I get a credit good for one book download. I figured this would be something good for working out. I can listen to a book while I do cardio or something.

I downloaded iWoz and I listened to the first several chapters while I was doing the grocery shopping. I am about an hour in and I think the whole book is 6 – 7 hours. I am sure I will listen to a good chunk of it on my flight down to Austin on Sunday.
