Getting the toys out…

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

Nicole woke me up around 11am… pretty late even for a Saturday, but neither one of us has been sleeping all that well. Nicole has a muscle spasm in her shoulder so she been taking medicine to help relieve that pain, but it also makes it hard for her to sleep. Me I dunno what my problem is… maybe I am drinking too much caffeine. I guess I better cut back.

So we got up, did the banking, and when we got home I made lunch. Nicole took a nap and a short time later I decided I had better go take care of things over at our storage unit. I needed to drop off a bunch of Christmas stuff we had been storing in the apartment and I needed to get my bike out. I was also thinking about getting my kayak out, but I wasn’t sure if I could get it to the car by myself. Our storage unit is on the second floor so you have to work the kayak around a couple turns and the down the stairs to get it outside. Luckily I managed to get it out myself, in fact I think it was easier doing it by myself. Anyway it took me an hour since my bike was buried and it was very hot inside the unit.

Anyway it’s done and this site makes me very happy!

Bike and Kayak

It’s tough to see, but the bike is on there also

Project “Rebel” WITH a Cause…

Friday, June 29th, 2007

Ok… I have decided that of I want a motorcycle the lazy days of summer are over for me. During the last quarter of 2006 I managed to lose about 35-40 pounds. Then I got injured and repeatedly sick. Long story short is I have managed to put those 35-40 pounds back on. Needless to say I want to take that weight back off. So I think I can kill two birds with one stone. I tend to jump in to things especially hobbies or anything that sounds cool. As an example I bought a 25 foot Sailboat while having no idea how to sail. So I figure if I associate buying the motorcycle with losing weight it will not only provide me with ample time to think over the motorcycle idea and provide motivation for losing weight.

I did something similar when I wanted to buy my new kayak. I was suppose to lose a certain amount of weight before I bought the kayak, but I found a good deal before I lost the weight and I never lost the weight. This time around I am more concerned with losing the weight than getting a good deal. With the kayak I was putting money away each week. This time around however I am going to work on paying off any outstanding debts I have, which really aren’t t00 bad. Once I have everything paid off I will take out a loan for the bike. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but trust me the interest rate on a motorcycle loan is much better than on a credit card.

So my goal is to lose approx 40 pounds in the next 26 weeks, which works out to approx 1.5 pounds a week. I have figured out my basal metabolic rate (BMR) using the Harris-Benedict equation. (See the embedded spreadsheet) I also figured in my activity modifier to determine how many calories I need to consume to lose the 1.5 pounds. I will be working on developing some menus and when I have those finished I will post those. On the second sheet of the spreadsheet I figured out how many calories I will be eating at each meal. I will be eating 6 “meals” a day. This practice helps keep your metabolism high and also keeps the urge to snack under control. In the past on similar plans I have tended to have a tough time eating enough calories. It’s hard to eat 3,000 high quality calories in one day. Now 3,000 low quality calories that’s easy.

I will also be drinking a lot of water about a gallon a day to be exact. Why so much water? Several reasons… first when you are properly hydrated your body gives up whatever water it is retaining which is why my first week I will probably lose 6-8 pounds. Second if you aren’t properly hydrated your liver, which converts fat to energy, gets distracted because it has to help your kidneys out. Last but not least it’s hard to workout when you are dehydrated.

Since it’s summer I am planning on doing much of my exercising outside of the gym. I will be riding my bike, lifting some weights at home, walking, playing Frisbee with Nicole, and kayaking. I want to be consistent, but not over do it.

Well that’s a rough sketch of what my plan is… I will be flushing out more details this weekend.

A Scooter, Part 2

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

So, Pat tells me I should buy a Vespa… mainly because they look cool and I agree, but they are more expensive.

Vespa GTV

I think what he’d rather see me get is a Honda Rebel :

2008 Honda Rebel

It’s kinda of a dinky little motorcycle, but since I will be just learning to ride it’s a good size for a nOOb.

The right tool for the job…

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Last night I broke down and bought myself a personal copy of phpEd. It’s a PHP development environment and it’s what we use at Jaduka to code. I begrudgingly started using it when I started my new job. Ben insisted it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I was skeptical. I had been programming with an upgraded version of Notepad since my first days with PHP. Well I will say it here… Ben you were right… phpED is the bomb.

Sheesh this job is costing me money… oh well it’s also making me a much better programmer!

Heading back to Austin…

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

I have two more trips planned to Austin. July 24th – August 3rd and August 19th – 31st. Then at some point in Sept. Ben and I are going to drive my car down with my kayak and bike on top. That should pretty much take me to the move. I might have to make another trip in there some where, but maybe not.

Scoot, Scoot, Scooting along…

Monday, June 25th, 2007

I am thinking about buying a motor scooter or a motorcycle for commuting to and from work while living in Austin. Honda Reflex ABS

This is the scooter I am looking at. It’s the Honda Reflex ABS. Admittedly it’s slightly dorky, but at 65 mpg it’s a huge improvement over my cars average gas mileage of about 25 mpg.

I ran some numbers through a loan calculator and I worked up a little spread sheet which you can see here. If I was able to put about $1100 down on the scooter my savings in gas would pay the loan payment. Now you’re thinking well then you really aren’t saving anything then which isn’t 100% true. I would be saving wear and tear on my already aging car. Not to mention maintenance on a car is more costly. Honestly I know I wouldn’t be able to use the scooter 100% of the time, but if I can manage to use it 75-80% of the time it will be worth it.

I need to do some more number crunching and hard thinking about the whole concept.  I will keep you updated.

Launching a new blog…

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

I am going to spend some time this weekend launching a new blog. Don’t worry about AYankeeinTexas going anywhere. My growing interest in all things comics has led me to the notion that I should set up a blog for those of us who have learned to love comics a bit later on in life. The blog with be called Capes and Car Payments and will be found at capesandcarpayments.com.

My goal will be to write almost daily here and at “Capes”. Let’s face it I need all the writing practice I can get.

Installed a cool plug-in…

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

Tonight I installed a cool plug-in for Wordpress called aLinks. It lets me enter in keyphrases and it automatically adds links to the URL’s I set for those keyphrases. I added Wordpress and aLinks to my keyphrase list. I will be adding keyphrases as needed. I think it’s a nice little feature that can add a bit of cross referencing to a post.

Ex Machina Vol. 1 – The First Hundred Days

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

I have become a big fan of Brian K. Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man ,which inevitably lead me to Ex Machina. Since I was pretty much taken in by Y: The Last Man from the get go I was a little discouraged when I didn’t get in to Ex Machina right away, but I stuck with it and tonight I finished the first trade paperback “The First 100 Days”. I can honestly say that towards the end I really started getting in to the story.

I can’t say for sure if it was me or the writing that kept me from getting in to the story sooner. Maybe one day I will reread it and think that I was nuts for not loving the story right away. Anyway I am looking forward to reading more of Ex Machina in the near future.
