A big slice of humble pie…

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

For the past few days I have been trying to figure out an issue we were having with one of the scripts that we had written for a work project. At Jaduka Eddie and I are the two Application Developers. The goal is that eventually we will both have equal skill sets but for now we’ve both basically gone with what we know best. Eddie is handling anything client side like Java Script, CSS, HTML and such. I have been taking care of all the server side scripting with PHP and SQL. Since the error fell on my side of the coding fence I poured myself in to fixing it.

I won’t go in to all the gory details, for many reasons, but mainly not to bore you. In the end I asked for some help and Eddie was glad to offer me a hand. He latched on to an issue I had noticed yesterday, but dismissed as it had seemed to of disappeared after I had rewritten some code. However when Eddie downloaded my code he was still seeing the error. As it turns out Eddie was on to the right thing. A few corrections and everything was running peachy. The worst part was the error was being caused by some other code I had written that was apparently a bit “buggy”.

Can I have my pie ala-mode?

Memorial Weekend Recap…

Wednesday, May 30th, 2007

Saturday: Nicole and got up early, ran some errands and headed to Jones Beach for the air show. We brought our folding chairs and cooler full of beverages. The air show was 5 hours long and the breeze off the ocean made a hot day bearable. There were many very cool military and non-military aircraft. Unfortunately the camera was dead from the Small Arms Dealer show a few days before. Nicole had a good time. She really liked the jets flying over. I think we will be attending more air shows in the future.

After the air show we went directly to Nicole’s parents apartment. We had some dinner and dessert. We sat around chatting till very late and by the time we got home I was exhausted.

Sunday: I honestly don’t remember what I did on Sunday. I am sure it wasn’t much as I was tired and I got a pretty decent sun burn on the tops of my feet. Nicole tried to get me to put more sunscreen on the tops of my feet, but I refused saying they were fine and in the end I paid the price.

Monday: We slept in a bit. Then we got up and went to breakfast. After breakfast I went to the bookstore to pick up a book on Object Oriented Programming with PHP for work. After we hit the bookstore we picked up Nicole’s Mom and took her to her fathers grave. He was a WWII vet and is buried in the National Cemetery on Long Island. They dropped me off at home and then they went to the Sayville Beach.

That’s pretty much my Holiday Weekend in a nutshell. I hope everyone had a fun and safe weekend.

Small Arms Dealer @ Union Square…

Monday, May 28th, 2007

I took a couple videos at the Small Arms Dealer show last week.

I am sorry the audio sucks. The P.A. at this particular show was even more sucky than usual for a punk show.

Enjoy…

Good morning, what day is it…

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I apologize for being such a slacker. I haven’t updated much in the past week. I am still trying to get adjusted to working from home. It gives life a whole new rhythm. You kind of have to force yourself to break up you day since there are no clearly defined breaking points. I guess my point is if you let them days can kind or blur together.

Digging a digital tunnel…

Monday, May 21st, 2007

To work from home I need to do what is known as tunneling. Basically all it means is you are creating a secure digital connection in to a network. Anyway the whole process might as well be magic to me, but for most of the day I was unable to tunnel in so I couldn’t get to the code I needed to work on. All was not lost I did however get some training on how to do an expense report. Which will come in handy getting reimbursed for my airfare to Austin.

Anyway things are going good. I think I am going to start exercising again and then get back on a healthier diet. Exercise is the hardest part for me to keep consistent at so I am going to start with that. Even though I have some goals in mind this time around I plan not to be as demanding of myself. Wish me luck!

Home again…

Monday, May 21st, 2007

Sorry for the lack updates, but what can I say life gets crazy from time to time. I am now safely back in NY. I had a great time in Austin and I am really enjoying the new job. I finally feel the urge once again to push myself to learn more and get better as a web programmer.

I got the laundry done today. Tomorrow I need to hit the grocery store. That will have to wait till Nicole gets home since her car decided it needed to go to the mechanic. (The check engine light came on the other day.) Hopefully I can find something to eat for lunch around here.

I promise to update more this week since things have settled down a bit.

Austin/Dallas: Day 9

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I set the alarm clock in my room for 7 am. The alarm went off, I got up, and booted up my computer. The computers clock said 6 am. ugh! I laid back down for a half hour, then got up and set up the ironing board. I ironed some shirts, took a shower, and headed down to breakfast. As I was finishing breakfast Ben came down and was ready to go to the office.

I got the grand tour of the Dallas office and was introduced to pretty much everyone there. Shortly there after the training session began. Around 12:30 we had pizza for lunch. Ben, Eddie, and I walked over to CVS to try to find something vegan for Ben to eat. Ben and Eddie ended up getting food from Quiznos. The thermometer at the bank on the corner said it was 91 degree.

The afternoon training session was short, but the rest of the afternoon was spent on a very productive conference call. It was clear that we as a team have a lot of work ahead of us in the next few months. Most of which is very exciting… well at least to me.

After work a group of us Jaduka folks went to a Mexican joint for dinner. After dinner I called Jassen to see if he had time to swing by the hotel for a few drinks. Ben, Jassen, Roland, and I sat in the hotel bar and had a few drinks till close to midnight. It was good to see Jassen again. I hadn’t seen him since my bachelor party about three and half years ago.

Austin/Dallas: Day 8

Monday, May 14th, 2007

I got to bed late last night because I forgot regular driers don’t dry as fast as the commercial driers in my apartment complex. After waiting about an hour for my cloths to dry I decided I better get to bed.

Today was a very productive day. Ben, Eddie and I got a lot accomplished. The day basically flew by and before I knew it we  were on our way to Dallas. On the way I decided the 3 hour drive to Dallas was about an hour too long. Ben and I both started to get very punchy.

Now we are at the hotel and I am going to pass out soon.

p.s. the WiFi in this hotel apparently sucks … ugh! So who knows when this will get posted.

Austin: Day 7

Monday, May 14th, 2007

Today was a fairly lazy Sunday. I slept in. When I got up Ben was out working on the yard. After a little bit we went to lunch. Ben, Gina, and I went to a place called “Fire Bowl Cafe“. It was pretty good. After lunch we stopped at DQ for some ice cream. On the way to DQ we passed by the apartment complex Nicole and I used to live in. Ben used to live there also. It still looks pretty ghetto.

When we got home we played some more “Settlers of Catan” on XBox 360. After a couple of hours Ben and I decided we would try to hook Ben’s GPS in to my laptop and go wardriving around Austin, but we couldn’t find drivers for the GPS. So gave up and came in to play some more “Settlers”.

Nicole called me and we talked for a while. I emailed her pictures of the apartment I think will be best for us. I also emailed her a link to the floor plan. She told me about her day. She spent most of it with her mom for Mother’s Day.

Ben and I watched “Entourage“. Then Ben ran me over to Sonic for some dinner. I ate and now I am doing my laundry. I need to get things washed since we are heading to Dallas tomorrow night.
